Shutdown suggestion

A suggestion to get through the shutdown. Both parties must realize that their common enemy is Donald ?Trump.    First, Republicans have to recognize their risk for losing the Senate in 2020. Experts say they will lose control and Mitch will become minority leader. Before that, they might see Mitch being primaried. Not easy since his recent races have been close. To survive however Repubs have to figure out were they will stand. Not good: and they have to know that Trump is going to be a negative factor in those elections; if he is still around.                                 So, they need to see a change of course as their only survival. They should vote to open the gov’t in concert with the Dems, showing a much needed unity to the American people, save those suffering this shutdown, with a veto proof commitment.                   Since they (Repubs) didn’t think it a national crisis to act for a wall when they had control of both Houses and the White House.  After they get govt open then negotiate for better border security and comprehensive immigration reform.                                                                                                         It boils down to stopping Trump. Both Republicans and Democrats can’t be “shutdown” by this President. If he wins this issue there will be more shutdowns. And if the Republicans hope to have a principled national party in the future they have to reach back to the values of Reagon, Eisenhower and Lincoln.

In November, 1964 my buddies and I were invited to dinner at the home of a french family in Brest, France. We were there after being at sea during Operation Steel Pike (ref:Wikipedia).  Our frenchman host had been in the french army and had fought in Indochina.  He described his experiences in that war as brutal and unwinnable. The French were thoroughly defeated at the famous battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954 and withdrew shortly after from their colony. After a lovely dinner we settled in the living room; enjoyed cognac and discussed politics. Our host finally brought up a subject that none of us knew much about; the involvement of the United States in Vietnam. He wanted to know what we knew of the conditions there and how we saw US intentions. I admitted not knowing very much about the situation other than our military role was advisory-supposedly helping the Republic of South Vietnam but that the Gulf of Tonkin incident this summer was serious. Trump and the virus

Since I’m social distancing and because I’m 78 with COPD and because there are no live sports I find myself watching a lot of “virus” TV. I’m current with the virus updates and actions taken by our political leaders at all levels. And I switch around all the media outlets-cable, local and national networks, Facebook, YouTube and Tweeter. My sense is this virus is real, dangerous and a lot of it’s behavior is unknown. There are enough critics on all sides to point out how this country got caught with it’s pants down. But now we should be reacting like we did during the two attacks in the past-Pearl Harbor and 911. We stumbled in the beginning of both attacks but then gained our footing, unified and got to work.  Because of where we find ourselves we need a President like Roosevelt or Bush. But we have Trump.
